Start by listing every compliance assumption as a testable claim, not a given. Write down: "We must collect a photo ID," "We must verify liveness," "We must reject blurry images," "We must complete verification in one session." Then ask of each: What regulation actually requires this, and what did we add on top for fraud prevention or internal comfort? Most fintech teams conflate the two.

Next, invert: instead of asking "how do we get users through verification," ask "where will users die in this flow, and how do we remove those death points?" That's Jacobi's invert, always invert. You'll likely find the killer isn't the regulation—it's the friction you layered on top: re-uploading a photo three times, no error explanation, mobile-only camera requirements on desktop.

Then test laterally. Can you split verification into staged collection—capture the ID now, verify liveness later? Can you pre-fill data from a bank login (Plaid-style) and only request the ID as a fallback? Can you run verification in the background while the user explores the product? The regulation rarely mandates when or how the check happens—only that it happens. Break the "one sitting, one path" premise and you'll find room.

Your premise is that the test rewards a specific form, but tests actually reward specific features: a clear thesis, evidence, transitions, a conclusion. Those are not the same as "five paragraphs, intro-first, conclusion-last." Break that equivalence and you free your students without sacrificing scores.

Invert the problem: ask what makes an essay fail the rubric—vague claims, no evidence, disorganized logic. Then teach creativity within those constraints. Let students open with a question, a scene, or a counterintuitive claim, as long as the thesis appears by the end of the first third. Let them structure by idea rather than by paragraph count, as long as each idea is developed and linked.

Use de Bono's lateral move: take a rubric category and ask "what's the opposite of how we usually satisfy it?" Instead of "state your thesis clearly," try "hide your thesis and make the reader discover it"—then grade it against the same evidence standard. You'll find the rubric rewards clarity of thought, not placement of a sentence.

Finally, be honest with yourself: are you teaching form because it's safe, or because it's proven? Run a small experiment—teach one class with flexible structure, grade both classes blindly against the rubric, and compare. Let evidence, not habit, decide.
