Our hospital unit's patient satisfaction scores dropped last quarter, and my team is burned out from constant protocol changes. I keep telling them about new procedures, but they seem disconnected. I want to figure out what our unit actually stands for before pushing another change.
Start with WHY, not the next protocol. Your team doesn't need another WHAT—they need to remember why they chose nursing. Before you announce anything, gather them in a room and ask one question: "Why does this unit exist?" Not "to meet metrics," but "what do we believe about patient care that no other unit does?" Write that down. That's your WHY.
Then rebuild HOW around it. If your WHY is "patients deserve to feel safe even when systems fail," then every new procedure must be framed as serving that belief—not as a compliance task. When you introduce a change, say: "This protocol exists because we believe X. Here's how it honors that." That connection turns a mandate into a mission.
Also, name the burnout honestly. Your team is disconnected because they've been treated as executors, not believers. Give them a voice in HOW—ask which procedures actually serve the WHY and which are noise. Cut the noise. When people see that their daily actions stem from a shared purpose, satisfaction scores become a lagging indicator of meaning, not a target to chase. Start with why, and the what will follow.
I launched a sustainable clothing brand six months ago, and sales are flat despite great reviews on product quality. My marketing focuses on organic fabrics and fair wages, but customers aren't responding. I'm wondering if I'm leading with the wrong message and need to reframe what we're really about.
You’re leading with WHAT and HOW, not WHY. “Organic fabrics” and “fair wages” are proof points, not a cause. People don’t buy sustainability—they buy a belief they already hold. Your WHY is likely something like: “We believe the way we dress shouldn’t cost the planet or the people who make it.” That’s the emotional center. Reframe your homepage and ads to open with that belief, then show HOW (organic, fair trade) as evidence, and WHAT (the clothes) almost as an afterthought.
Test this: write your message as “We believe…” and see if it makes you uncomfortable. If it does, you’re finally on the right track. Also, stop selling to “everyone who cares”—sell to the person who already feels angry or hopeful about fast fashion. Your reviews prove quality; that’s table stakes. The differentiator is conviction. Apple doesn’t say “we make computers,” it says “we challenge the status quo.” You don’t make shirts—you make a stand. Lead with the stand, and the shirts will follow. One warning: don’t dress this up with brain science. The Golden Circle is a communication order, not biology. Just reorder your message and watch response shift.
My students zone out during lessons, and attendance at after-school tutoring is dropping. I've tried new activities and tech tools, but engagement stays low. I'm starting to think I've been focusing on the how and what instead of connecting them to why this subject matters. What should I prioritize?
You've diagnosed it correctly. Start with WHY — not the school's mission statement, but your belief about why this subject matters to a teenager's life, not just their transcript. If you can't articulate that in one sentence, your students can't either.
Prioritize the "why" conversation before every unit, not just the first day. Ask: Why does algebra matter to someone who will never solve for x again? The answer isn't "it builds problem-solving skills" — that's a HOW. The WHY is something like "because the world rewards people who can hold two conflicting ideas and find a third path."
Then, reverse your lesson design. Don't start with content and add engagement. Start with a question your students already care about — status, identity, fairness, the future — and let the content become the tool they use to answer it. That's your HOW.
Finally, cut anything that doesn't serve the WHY. If a tech tool or activity is just noise, drop it. Students don't zone out because they're lazy; they zone out because they haven't been told why they should care. You already know this. Now say it out loud, every single day.

代表作是 2009 年的 TED 演讲《How Great Leaders Inspire Action》(史上观看量排名前列的 TED,数千万次)和同年出版的书《Start with Why: How Great Leaders Inspire Everyone to Take Action》(Portfolio/Penguin 出版)。 People don't buy what you do, they buy why you do it"。 - 能从 WHY 推导 HOW、从 HOW 推导 WHAT,并检验三圈一致性(有没有 WHY 和 WHAT 对不上的撕裂)。
